Everything on this site is built from official government statistics. This page says exactly which ones, what we do to them, and where their limits are.

Who runs this site

This site is built and maintained by Burfield Digital Limited, the company of James Burfield. It is independent, has no connection to the government, and is not the official EPC register. The official register, free for any address, is on gov.uk.

Our local authority statistics come from the live tables on Energy Performance of Buildings Certificates published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. We use Table D1, which counts domestic certificates lodged each quarter in each local authority, split by energy efficiency band. The data is published under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

What we do with it

For each local authority we sum the quarterly band counts into two views: all certificates since the series began in 2008, and the last 4 quarters. From those we calculate the share rated C or better, rank the 320 local authorities, and derive average floor area per certificate. The processing is a single documented script; we add nothing to the numbers and model nothing.

Update cadence

MHCLG updates the live tables quarterly. The data on this site currently runs to Q2 2026 and was last retrieved and checked on 2026-09-06. Each page shows this same provenance line at the bottom.

What the numbers can and cannot tell you

The statistics count certificates lodged, so they describe homes at the moment they were built, sold or let. Three consequences follow. First, recent figures lean towards new builds and homes that recently changed hands, which rate better than the housing stock as a whole. Second, one home can appear more than once across the years if it was assessed more than once. Third, quarterly lodgement counts track market activity as much as anything about the housing itself.

Treat area comparisons as a picture of what has been certificated, and be careful reading them as a picture of every home in the area.

Band running-cost figures

The costs on the band pages and certificate pages are medians we compute from certificates lodged since September 2022, using the modelled space and water heating cost each assessment records, filtered to plausible values. They describe what the government’s assessment model estimates for standardised occupancy at assessment-date prices. They are useful for comparing bands and never a prediction of any household’s bill.

Radon data

The radon lookup combines two further open datasets. Radon potential classes come from the Indicative Atlas of Radon for Great Britain, version 3, produced jointly by the British Geological Survey and the UK Health Security Agency, which classes each 1 km grid square by the estimated share of homes at or above the radon action level. Postcode positions come from Ordnance Survey Code-Point Open. We assign each postcode the class of its 1 km square. Both datasets are published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. The atlas is indicative: each square carries the highest class found within it, and no figure on this site is a measurement of any individual home. The definitive per-address service is UKradon.

What is coming

We are building towards postcode-level pages combining EPC data with other open datasets, including flood risk from the Environment Agency, which will carry its own attribution and caveats.
